Here you are the 2nd of the three-parts post about writing a letter. In the 1st part I described the structure of the letter in Italian language, and now I carry on with English version. So that “how is the letter in English?” What is a letter? What can you do with it? Writing a letter means interchange and confidence and/or asking and answering questions in a simple piece of papaer that is not “a piece of cake”. Why? Because is like a composition, if on one side could seems easy, it’s really not; and this is due to different reasons: first of all for the topic development, you have to apply all your grammar and vocabulary knowledge, both in formal and informal language form =D. Then you must follow a specific structure for being precise, at last you must be precise and concise at the same time, because the English language hates the long form; you can get confused and disordered -_-. So, in this post I’ll put out some examples of written letters in English and I show you all its structural characteristics:
1. Date, place and writer address (this last is optional): at the top on the right.
2. Begin appropriately: Dear/Hi+NAME, how are you? Etc…. in the informal style; Good morning/afternoon/evening+Mr/MRS+SURNAME or Dear Sir/Madam, for being polite with your boss, or a colleague or an unknown person (and this is the FORMAL STYLE).
3. Use informal or formal language related to the person’s status to whom the letter is addressed: if you write to a friend you can use contractions and abbreviations, with a boss or a colleague is not the case!
4.Develop the topic by grouping the ideas in paragraphs.
5. End appropriately: Looking forward to hearing from you (both in formal and informal writing). Best wishes (informal)/Best regards (formal).
6. Use a phrase to close your letter: Hope it all goes well/ Hope to hear from you soon/ Best of luck with…./Write soon. NOTE: these formulas are only in the informal language (y).
Ok, let’s go with letter examples:
